The small town of Barriere – population about 1,200 – is the first major stop north of Kamloops on the Yellowhead Highway (Hwy 5). At 63 km (39 mi) from Kamloops and a short drive from Wells Gray, Mt. Robson, and Jasper National Parks, it's a reasonable place to stop on a trip in either direction between Vancouver and Edmonton. The town is cradled in the narrow valley between the Caribou range in the west and the Monashees to the northeast and sited at the confluence of the North Thompson and Barriere Rivers.
